Advocate General Office

The Office of Advocate General is a Special Institution attached to the Law Department. It is headed by Advocate General Punjab. The Governor, on the advice of the Chief Minister or the Cabinet, in terms of Article 140 read with Article 105 of the Constitution, appoints him but he serves during the pleasure of the Governor. A person who is qualified to be appointed as judge of a High Court is eligible for appointment as Advocate General. He is not allowed to carry on his private practice. He is assisted by the requisite number of Additional Advocates General and Assistant Advocates Generals. The Chief Minister appoints them in terms of rule 1.18 of the Law Department Manual 1938 and the Punjab Government Rules of Business 2011.

The Advocate General advises on civil cases relating to the Government or executive action by the Punjab Government under the law, and on any other legal matter that may be referred to him by the Governor or the Government. That office represents Government of the Punjab in all civil cases in the Superior courts.

Advocate General has the right to speak and otherwise take part in the proceedings of Provincial Assembly of the Punjab or any of its committees on which he is nominated as member but has no right to vote.
